Let’s take a side trip from nacho land to talk about another tasty snack: potato chips with dip. Not just any dip, french onion dip. My personal chip/dip combination preference is Simply Ruffles with Dean’s French Onion–you can’t go wrong with the classic flavor of the dip and the chips are just the right texture and thickness to handle a pile of dip (they’re also moderately more healthy than regular Ruffles, so you can eat even more!).
A few months ago we were having cheeseburgers for dinner at home, which obviously called for a side of chips and dip. I ventured out to my local grocery store to pick up the supplies we were lacking and had a moment of panic when I reached the dairy section because there were no eight-ounce containers of Dean’s French Onion. WHAT WAS I GOING TO DO? I could get a different brand, but it would probably be terrible. I could go with a different side, but no. The only logical option was to purchase the 16-ounce container, but that is so dangerous!
Why would that be dangerous? Because I didn’t trust myself to bring that giant tub of delicious into the house and not polish it off in a matter of days, leaving my partner so horrified and disgusted that he would pack his bags, take the dogs and leave me to fend for myself, eating dinners of chips and dip with the 14 cats I would inevitably adopt.
You’ll be happy to know that, though I brought the 16-ounce container home, I managed to control myself and my relationship is intact.
It’s a good thing it wasn’t National Chip and Dip Day or there may have been a different ending to the story. Speaking of that glorious holiday, it’s coming up–March 23–so get ready to celebrate accordingly.
Happy dipping!

Kara Luedtke was raised to think that nachos consisted of microwaved Velveeta cheese dip and corn tortilla chips. Thankfully she grew to learn that nachos are so much more. She once listed nachos as second in a list of 20 things she is thankful for, above two immediate family members and her partner of nearly 13 years. When she isn’t eating nachos, she is thinking about nachos while cuddling with her cat and two dogs.
